The annual presentation evening to charities benefiting from the Porthcawl Christmas Swim took place recently at The Hi Tide Inn, Porthcawl, where 26 cheque recipients, along with guests, sponsors and committee members attended.

A total of £12,500 was distributed to charities and organisations in the Porthcawl area. This included money raised at Porthcawl Carnival, as well as at the swim.

A further £2,100 was donated from Rev Canon Philip Masson and family. Rev Phillip took part in the 2016 swim, along with three of his daughters.

The chairman of the Swim Committee, Dave King welcomed everyone to the Hi Tide. Following the introductions Coun Robert Lee, the Mayor of Porthcawl, was invited to say a words and receive a donation for the Mayor’s Fund.

The main recipients from the 2016 Carnival was Porthcawl Rock Club and Porthcawl Y Centre. For the 2016 Swim, it was the Emyr Owen Branch of LATCH.

Other recipients included local branches of Samaritans, Kidney Research, Parkinson’s Support Group, Guide Dogs, Porthcawl RFC Juniors, Porthcawl Stroke Club, Trinity Care Support, Porthcawl Lifeguards, Ty Ellis, Porthcawl Athletic, PAODS, Porthcawl Sea Cadets, Porthcawl Museum Historical Society, Porthcawl Coast Watch, Porthcawl Pyle Pumas, Sandville, the Emergency Services, RNLI, Coast Guard, St John Ambulance, Porthcawl Fire Service and also the Noah’s Ark ‘Tiny Lives’ Appeal.

A number of recipients responded with their appreciation and told their stories – some poignant moments that touched hearts!

Tributes were paid to David Lewis (‘Dai Splash’) who passed away last year. Mr Lewis attended many Christmas Morning Swims and raised many hundreds of pounds over the years.

He was a past chairman of Penybont Surf Life Saving Club. The current chairman, Mike Allen, received a donation on behalf of Penybont Surf Life Saving and gave his own tribute to Mr Lewis.

On completion of the presentations, the raffle was drawn. A wonderful buffet was served by the Hi Tide and entertainment was provided by Porthcawl Rock Club, who were terrific, well done all you ‘Rising Stars’

Dave went on to thank Hugh Murry of Porthcawl Surf School, Rest Bay and congratulated him on this award in 2016 ‘Best UK Surf School’.

He thanked Porthcawl Town Council for their continued support, sponsors, advertisers, the Hi Tide management and staff, the committees and of course the swimmers, the organisations that enter floats and the general public who continue to support and donate.

Here’s hoping for a record breaking Carnival and Swim in 2017 – two of the premier events in Porthcawl’s calendar.
