After a string of stunning musical shows – last year Jekyll and Hyde and the year before Phantom of the Opera – the Bridgend Youth Theatre (BYT) is bringing West Side Story to Porthcawl’s Grand Pavilion in February.

As the Sondheim/Bernstein classic features great songs, sharp wit, tragedy and high energy dancing, it’s a fair bet that the show could play to full houses.

In many ways, the updated Romeo and Juliet story, set in New York with the Sharks and the Jets as the antagonists, is just as relevant today as it ever was.

The show will be directed by Roger Burnell, with Naiomi Pearl Roberts as assistant director.

The musical director is Nathan Jones, and the choreographers will be Andy Burnett, Naiomi Pearl Roberts and Meredith Lewis.

The GEM dropped into a rehearsal as the young cast were working on the show’s dance routines, which range from salsa to ballet.

A string of quality actors have found their feet with the BYT – Aneurin Barnard, Amy Morgan, Katie-Elin Salt to name just three, and next stop for some of this cast should be some of the major colleges of music and drama.

Performances: Open dress rehearsal Wednesday, February 17, 7.30pm, Thursday, February 18. 7.30pm, Friday, February 19, 2,30pm and 7.30pm.
