Alan Johns, who is attached to Tim Vaughan’s Aberthin yard, saw the old year out in fine style when winning the BetFred ‘Wishing You A Happy New Year Handicap Hurdle’ at Newbury on Vaughan’s TheLigny, which scored by two-and-three-quarter lengths from the gambled-on Geordie Des Champs trained by west Wales’ Rebecca Curtis, a winner of its previous four starts.

TheLigny, who was returned at odds of 12-1, is also a consistent sort and was winning for the fourth time this season.

Evan wins on Somme Boy

At the Cambridgeshire Harriers Hunt Club Point-To-Point Steeplechases at Cottenham, Llanharan’s Evan David won the Young Horse Open Maiden Race on the Andrew Pennock-trained, French-bred five-year-old Somme Boy.

A 5-1 chance, Somme Boy won by a length from Kev The Car.
