The Rhondda Symphony Orchestra is basing its forthcoming Porthcawl concert in on July 9 on music purely from Welsh and English composers.

The orchestra is planning to ask the audience to complete ‘composer-ratings’ out of 10 after each piece to determine the eventual winner on points.

An experienced line-up for England will include Elgar, Vaughan Williams, Arnold and Britten, while Wales field a younger, mixed team of Alun Hoddinott, William Mathias and Grace Williams.

Some of the more patriotic numbers include ‘Welsh Dances Suite’ and ‘Fantasia on Welsh Nursery Tunes’, while the Vaughan Williams ‘Tuba Concerto’ will be performed by last year’s Young Musician of the Valleys winner Peter Greenwood.

The concert takes place on the eve of the Euro 2016 final, July 9 at 7.30pm in All Saints’ Church, Porthcawl.

Tickets £10 on the door (under 18s free), search Rhondda Symphony, or call 01443 650412.
