A special party has been held for a very special 80 year old.

Porthcawl’s Grand Pavilion has hosted countless celebrations over the years, but today all eyes are on the iconic seaside building.

A party has been held to mark the occasion, and guests included residents born in 1932, the same year as the pavilion opened its doors.

This place is packed with memories because we used to come old-time dancing here. It was fantastic in those days. And if you couldn’t get a bus home you slept under the pavilion!

– Keith Davies, Porthcawl resident

The pavilion was build at a cost of twenty-five thousand pounds, the equivalent of around £1.4 million today.

It’s known for its good old-fashioned seaside entertainment and even the odd spot of romance.

I met my husband here and he actually proposed to me on the prom just over there. In 1962. We’re really lucky to have the pavilion. It’s the landmark of Porthcawl, you know

– Cllr Marlene Thomas, Mayor of Bridgend County Borough Council

And it’s landmark that’s sure to be enjoyed by generations to come.
