The final game of 2017 for the Barry Chess Club was a rearranged fixture away to the Cardiff Pawns for our Bosons team in Division 1.

The Pawns were looking safe recently, however the relaxation in the nomination rule has seen an improvement by the North Cardiff Cheetahs.

Having lost their first six matches and looking all but relegated already the Cheetahs have utilised the Woodpushers players and have won their last three games of 2017.

Although the Cheetahs remain in the bottom three they are moving up and bringing other teams into the relegation fight.

The Bosons needed a good result to maintain their position in mid table. They duly obtained the right result with wins by Rhys Steele and Dave Parsons. Matthew Davies, Steve Cunliffe and Sam Jukes all chipped in with draws to give the Bosons 3.5 points from a possible five.

The Bosons consolidated their midtable position and at the halfway stage in the season sit in fifth place.

In an unusual season they are 3.5 points below second place. The Woodpushers lead the way with an eight point advantage and appear to be on their way to their first-ever title.

If they do win it will end the run of seven successive titles for the Cardiff Castles. Then Pawns will be looking over their shoulders because they only have a two point advantage over the bottom three.

The Barry Chess Club meets at 7.30pm each Monday at the West End Club, St. Nicholas Road, Barry CF62 6QY.

The club is open to players of all standards; whether you are interested in playing competitive chess or just the occasional friendly games.

New players are very welcome to just turn up on the night but if you contact one of the club members through the website we can explain what is happening on the night you have in mind, and arrange for someone to greet you on your arrival.
