Miguel Angel Jimenez narrowly missed out on a course record but remains firmly in the hunt for a first seniors title after shooting a six-under-par third round of 65 at the British Seniors Open at Royal Porthcawl.

The Spaniard, 53, only needed a birdie on the par-five 18th to eclipse the record-equalling scores of 64 shot by Tom Pernice Jr and Peter Walton the last time the event was staged in Wales in 2014.

He was unaware of the record, but annoyed with himself for finishing with another six after hitting a sweet drive into the middle of the fairway on the 505-yard hole. Given the awful conditions on Friday, when he came home with four successive bogeys, there was a reasonable excuse.
