Car leaves road and lands upside down on coast path just before fun run

This was the scene when a car left the road and landed upside down on a coast path moments before a fun run took place.

A person has been taken to hospital after the car flipped in Rest Bay in Porthcawl on Boxing Day.

It took place on the same day as the annual Boxing Day Fun Run was hosted in the area.

A passerby, who asked not to be named, said he had stopped for a drink when the incident occured.

He said a car accelerated before he heard a “loud bang”.

He said: “The car flew in the air turning over and landing upside down. This was just before lots of people were running down the path.

“The man was taken across the road by several people and the emergency services called. There was petrol everywhere.”

Another person said friends had been there when it happened. They said the car, which looks like a buggy or a specialist lightweight sports car, “swerved one way, then the other, then clipped the big boulders on the side and went up in the air, landing on its roof on the pavement”.

They added: “A man clambered out and then lay down, surrounded by stewards for the fun run. I believe ambulance and fire were called, as fuel was leaking from the car.

“There were so many people there for the fun run. A couple of minutes later and it might have been a very sad story!”

Wales Air Ambulance confirmed it attended the scene of a crash in Porthcawl on Wednesday morning.

They arrived at the scene at 12.15pm.

A spokesman said: “Our crew worked with Welsh Ambulance Service colleagues to triage and treat the patient, who was then conveyed to a nearby hospital in a road ambulance.

“Our role in the incident finished at 1.16pm.”
