Porthcawl Lions Club held a ‘flagship’ event to mark 100 years of worldwide service work by Lions Clubs International, when more than 200 people attended All Saints Church, Victoria Avenue, Porthcawl, on June 21 for an evening in the company of Niall Ferguson.

The renowned historian, academic, author and TV and radio presenter made an appearance to support the Porthcawl Lions in marking the centennial anniversary of Lions Clubs International.

With more than 1.4 million members in many countries, it was fitting that Professor Ferguson spoke with clarity and authority on a range of topics of world importance to the audience.

Event co-ordinator, and longstanding Lions member, Martin Patten, said the club was “overwhelmed” by the public support for the evening, which raised £2,000 for causes supported by Porthcawl Lions Club.

Porthcawl Lions will continue with their fundraising and service work in recognition of the centennial anniversary with a range of events, the next of which is a vintage and classic car rally to be held at the Porthcawl Rugby Club on August 5 starting at 12 noon.
