“Like he that on a lonesome road, doth walk in fear and dread…”

The lines from The Rime of the Ancyent Marinere struck a chilling note for Cowbridge Rotary Club Hallowe’en Night supper at The Bear.

Club members turned up in fancy dress, coming as wizards and witches, ghoulies and ghosties or something straight from the morgue.

The scene was laid for a memorable night, with spooky lighting and a candelabra on every table. It really was a lot of fun. There were competitions; ‘best witch’ and ‘best wizard/ghoul’; ‘best pumpkin’ and a ‘horror quiz’.

For instance, can you remember the names of the couple in ‘The Adams Family’? (they were Gomez and Mortitia).

Finally, to round the evening off, there was long, unsettling tale from a seasoned storyteller about a blacksmith and the very strange travelling companion he met as he walked along a winding, lonely road in the forest.

What happened to them? Well, all was not what it seemed. Was there a happy ending? That would be telling. But it was a night that will live long in the club’s memory…
