The Buckaneers, who organise both the Porthcawl Christmas Swim and the Porthcawl Carnival invited a record number of local groups to the Hi-Tide Inn recently to present them with donations.

The two events enjoyed ideal weather conditions this year, which goes some way to explaining the fact that the combined total raised by the events was a record £24,000, but the use of social media donation platforms was also a factor.

Within the Buckaneers, two committees work on each event. Kerry Marlow chairs the carnival committee and Dave King chairs the swim committee.

This year’s main beneficiary was Prostate Cymru, which started life almost 20 years ago in Cowbridge, and Tina Tew, the chief executiver, and David Brace, the president received a cheque for £7,000 from Dave King.

Dave King added that Prostate Cymru had been a great help in guiding swimmers to raise cash through platforms such as justgiving, and he felt this was a definite factor in raising more cash this year.

The remaining £17,000 was shared out between more than 20 local charities and organisations, who all sent representatives on the night.

A special presentation was made to Mike and Norah Clarke, who have bee Father and Mother Christmas at the swim for many years now.
