Cricket: Maesteg Celtic battle to avoid drop

MAESTEG Celtic look like facing a six-week battle against relegation as they languish just one place off the foot of the Thomas Carroll South Wales Cricket Association first division table after their ninth defeat of the season.

But they were unfortunate to lose to high-flying Tata Steel, who overhauled their opponents’ score only with the final ball of the match.

Celtic won the toss, chose to bat and totalled 215-7, with Gareth Hopkins bagging 67 and Tom Morgan 43. Kelvin Bartle captured four for 49 in a fine spell.

The Steelmen reached 216-6 with the last ball of their final over. Cameron Bamford was unbeaten on 68, while Bartle contributed 70 and Owain Davies 36. Lee Morgan took 3-41 and the Margam outfit got home by four wickets to consolidate third place.

Also in the top flight, Cowbridge were unlucky not to inflict defeat on former champions Dafen, who held on grimly for a draw at 156-9.

Will Harries took 5-48 in 10 overs. The Vale side had earlier hit 218-5 with Jake Harris knocking 69 and Tom Merilaht 67.

Neath continue to dominate affairs at the summit of the division well clear of Ynystawe.

Aberdare are now neck and neck with Skewen at the top of the second division after easily accounting for their rivals, an 80-run win was no more than they deserved.

Aberdare chose to bat first and amassed 211-6 in their 50 overs with Luke Garthwaite the hero contributing a brilliant 93 which included 10 fours and three sixes.

Michael Weathersby was unbeaten on 36 and John Derrick on 26. Jamie Lewis and David Thomas took the wickets between them.

Skewen were then skittled out for 36 with Dean Kreischer top scoring with 36. Geoff Derrick returned the best bowling figures of 3-29.

In the big top of the table battle in Division Three Maesteg were in magnificent form to crush Porthcawl by 132 runs but the Seasiders remain at the head of affairs.

Maesteg posted the day’s highest score 321-7 with an unbeaten 104 by Steffan Roberts the highlight while Andrew King contributed 63 and Ryan Parry 46. Ian Jones took 5-57.

Porthcawl were then dismissed for 189 with Mark Dixon weighing in with 74 but it was to no avail.

Merthyr Tydfil overcame Cimla by 81 runs thanks to a masterful batting display. They scored 230-7 with Wayne Davies (60),Mark Lewis (57) and Chris Shopland (52) the main contributors.

Cimla were all out for 149 and this result consolidated Merthyr’s position in mid-table.

Llantwit Major Cavaliers overcame Felinfoel by 91 runs in Division Four.

Put into bat Llantwit amassed a formidable 255-7 with Jake McNaughton collecting 93 including 15 4’s and one six. Harry Withers knocked 55.

Felinfoel were dismissed for 164,Sam Pickford taking 4-35 and James Snelson 4-53.

Pwll are the fourth division leaders with the Cavaliers second.
