Last Sunday, Cowbridge under-16s produced an excellent performance to deliver a hard fought away victory at Caldicot RFC.

The victory was even sweeter because the team had to play the entire match with only 14 players.

The boys got off to a great start with an early try from their captain, Jack Little. Evan Thomas put the team deep into the Caldicot 22 with a superb clearing kick.

From the line-out Iestyn Fenn put the Caldicot line out under enormous pressure. This caused Caldicot to knock the ball on. Cowbridge were awarded a scrum five metres from the Caldicot line.

Little picked the ball up and ran hard at the Caldicot line, quick recycled ball allowed Ioan Williams to get his backs moving. A simple scissor move in the backs brought the ball back to the forwards. Jake Cannon.

The Cowbridge hooker, picked the ball up and ran down the blind-side and made a subtle off load to Little who forced his way over the line. Caldicot under-16s 0, Cowbridge under-16s 5.

Caldicot came back hard at Cowbridge, and it was a brilliant defensive set that kept the much larger Caldicot pack away from the Cowbridge line.

A text-book turnover from Ben Jones allowed Thomas to clear his lines again with a huge kick. A disciplined chase by all the backs put the Caldicot full back under pressure which resulted in Cowbridge being awarded a penalty. Ioan Williams took the three points.

Once again Caldicot put Cowbridge under intense pressure straight from the kick off. Cowbridge defence held their nerve and defended their line heroically.

From a turnover just outside his own 22, Thomas put in a high clearing kick, which Harry Ridge, the Cowbridge outside centre to caught just before the Caldicot full-back.

Ridge then showed great pace to make to the try line without a hand being laid on him. Ioan Williams converted to make it Caldicot under-16s 0, Cowbridge under-16s 15.

Just before half-time Caldicot got a well-deserved try of their own. From a line out five metres from the Cowbridge line, Caldicot executed an excellent rolling maul to get onto the score sheet.

The half-time score was Calidcot under-16s 5, Cowbridge under-16s 15.

The second half followed a similar pattern to the first, with Caldicot on the attack but Cowbridge defending incredibly well.

With the penalty count growing, the Cowbridge coaches were becoming increasingly frustrated with their team’s lack of discipline.

After an energy sapping 10 minutes of defensive pressure Cowbridge managed to clear their lines.

Cowbridge next score was created on the training ground and pleased the coaches to see their hard work in training coming off during a game.

Quick ball out of the line out from Barny Langton-Cryer allowed Williams to give Thomas great quick ball.

With a few dummy runners, Thomas delayed his pass just enough to put Jack Dixon clear to score under the posts. Williams converted to make it Caldicot under-16s 5, Cowbridge under-16s 22.

With the last play of the game Caldicot managed a very similar try to the one that closed out the first half.

From a line out, five metres from the Cowbridge line, Caldicot produced another rolling maul, but this time the Cowbridge pack managed to turn the ball over.

However, with the pressure growing a clearing kick got charged down and Caldicot pounced on the loose ball to make the final score 10-22.
