The Royal Porthcawl hosted the British Senior Open presented by Rolex last week, and it is fair to say that the course showed several sides of its character.

On Thursday (round one, and Sunday (round four) the links course was tough but fair, while on Saturday, round three, the benign conditions led to good scoring.

However, and what a however it is, Porthcawl showed its teeth on the Friday, as strong winds and horizontal rain left competitors battered, bruised, and in some cases utterly defeated.

As luck would have it, GEM photographer Glyn Evans was out and about on the Friday, spotting famous golfing names and, not surprisingly, they were short of smiles!

Bernhard Langer knuckled down and got it round in 74, on his way to a four round total of 280 (four under par).

He clearly likes the Royal, as when the tournament was played here in 2014, the quiet and determined German was the victor then as well.

His reward for his all-round high quality golf was a cheque for €266,923.

The total prize fund, incidentally, was £1.5 million.
