Former Welsh international footballer Nathan Blake is to star in a new theatre project touring a number of local theatres.

He has a lead role in a brand new multi-media performance ’Robeson Remembered’ – a newly commissioned piece of theatre devised by producer Roger Burnell, working alongside writer Louise Osbourne, director Gavin Porter and composer John Rea.

It features a rich mix of Film, Theatre , Soundscapes, Film and Stills archive, and Male Voice Choirs.

On October 5, 1957 Paul Robeson made his transatlantic broadcast from a recording studio in New York to the Miners Eisteddfod in the Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl . With his passport having been taken from him by the American authorities, he was unable to attend the Eisteddfod.

The piece celebrates the 60th anniversary of his live link from New York to the South Wales Miners Eisteddfod at the Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl declaring his support for their common cause: Freedom and Social Justice.

The performances will take place at :

Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl – Fri. Nov. 3rd / Sat. Nov. 4th – 7.30.

Park and Dare, Treorchy – Sat. Nov. 11th – 7.30

Maesteg Town Hall – Sat. Nov. 18th – 7.30

Nathan Blake says that “It is important that we ensure young people are made aware of their heritage, especially the legacy of Paul Robeson and his links to Wales. I am excited to be working with such a talented group of young people, their commitment and passion for the project throughout has been truly remarkable.”

In the spirit of Bridgend Youth Theatre’s values of inclusion and team work, the basis of the play has been workshopped by over 200 members from 4-25 and some 60 of those members will share their theatre piece with the public, alongside Porthcawl Male Voice Choir and Neath Male Voice Choir.

Now in its 19th year, Bridgend Youth Theatre is an established BAFTA award-winning theatre company run in partnership with It’s My Shout Productions Ltd. BYT is an exciting youth group that offer many experiences in theatre, film and television and most recently dance. Many ’BYT graduates’ go on to work in the industry on a regular basis.
