Golfer wins prestigious club tournament – and does it again 40 years later

A golfer has won a prestigious annual competition – 39 years after his first victory.

When Mervyn Landeg first won the Captain’s Putter at Royal Porthcawl, Harold Wilson was Prime Minister and McDonald’s was preparing to open its first restaurant in Britain.

But Mervyn, 81, has just secured his third win in the competition at the exclusive golf course after previous wins in 1974 and 1982.

Mervyn, of Porthcawl, is a previous captain at the club, where he has been a member for decades.

“Back in the 1950s, I kept on pulling a lot of muscles playing rugby, so I went down to a building site in Birmingham and started hitting objects with sticks,” he said.

“Then I thought to myself ‘I’m quite good at this’.”

But Mervyn said it’s not just winning that attracts him to the game, adding: “Golfers are genuinely nice people, I’ve met a lot of dear friends on the way, and there’s the lovely scenery you get to see at the various holes.”

The Captain’s Putter tournament win is all the more remarkable as it is a competition for all ages – from 10 to 85 – and is held in high esteem at the club.

But Peter Evans, the club’s professional, said that the win came to no surprise.

“Mervyn has always been a remarkable player, and after his previous wins and captaincy at the club it’s an excellent achievement for him,” he said.

Mervyn, who lost his wife, Margaret, in March, said he had had a premonition about the outcome of the tournament.

“When my wife died, it knocked me for six,” he said. “I felt daft entering the competition, and it was probably just a stroke of luck, but I had a feeling that something extraordinary was going to happen, and when I won it was an incredible feeling.”

The Captain’s Putter remains in the Royal Porthcawl clubhouse, with Mervyn’s name on the clubhouse board as the 2013 winner.
