YMCA Barry Gymnastics Club are extremely proud of the achievements of their male gymnastics squad over the last few weeks.

Earlier this year YMCA Barry gymnasts Josh Cook and Iwan Mepham were selected to be on the Commonwealth 2018 long list.

This means that Josh and Iwan have had to undertake many Commonwealth trials to make the final team that will travel to Australia.

Josh and Iwan completed two recent trials one in London and one in Cardiff, where they completed many new spectacular skills in their routines and gaining many of the qualification scores.

Josh and Iwan are now working towards their next trials where they will be aiming to gain further qualifying scores.

YMCA Barry also had three other gymnasts competing in this year’s London Open Championships, which is one of the biggest competitions in Britain where all the top gymnasts in the country compete.

In the youngest category, Charlie Watkins competed in his first British competition, where he demonstrated great maturity and performed excellently throughout. Charlie particularly shone on vault where he placed third against extremely strong competition.

Sammi Morgan gained 11th overall in his age category and fourth on the Pommel Horse. This is a fantastic achievement for Sammi who is now competing at the highest level for his age group.

Our final competitor at the London Open was Harri Morgan who has

dramatically increased the difficulty of his routines for the competition and gained valuable experience moving on to future competitions with his new routines.

At the 2017 Welsh Elite Grades Jacob Watkins and Charlie Watkins competed and truly excelled themselves.

In the Elite Grade 1 category Charlie placed third on Pommel, second on Parallel Bars, third on Physical Preparation, first on Vault and Overall took the bronze medal.

Due to Charlie’s high level of performance, Charlie has been selected to represent Wales in the British Elite Grades Finals later this month.

Jacob Watkins in the eight year old category swept the board with first on Vault, Physical Preparation Pommel Horse, second on Rings Floor and third on Parrallel Bars.

Jacob was then crowned the overall eight-year-old Welsh Champion. Due to these impressive results, both Charlie and Jacob have been selected for the Welsh Elite Gymnastics Squad.
