One of Porthcawl’s most well-known character buildings has been placed on the market.

The Rest is a historic highly visible building last used as a convalescent hotel and was built over 100 years ago, reputedly with backing from Florence Nightingale.

Gareth Carter, Director at Savills Cardiff, who is handling the sale said: “This is an impressive Victorian building occupying an elevated position overlooking Rest Bay. The building extends to over 50,000 sq ft and has recently seen planning permission for the redevelopment of 68 apartments retaining the listed fa├žade and with a large element of new build accommodation to the rear.

“The architects have cleverly designed a scheme to give 180 degree views from Porthcawl to the Gower and across the Channel towards the Exmoor Heritage Coast.

“The property also adjoins Royal Porthcawl Golf Club, one of the top 100-rated courses in the world and rated the best in Wales.

He added: “Savills and joint agents, EJ Hales, are already talking to several interested parties and we hope to be concluding negotiations during the summer months.”
