The YMCA Movement was founded by 12 young men in London in 1844.

Today the Movement has some sixty five million members and a further fifty eight million users in 124 countries around the world.
Porthcawl YMCA has offered continuous service to the community of Porthcawl for 110 years. Our emphasis is to work with young people helping them to find a positive and worthwhile future. Our building and programmes, however, are geared to all ages as a Community Hub.
Throughout its history the YMCA has relied heavily on volunteers, this is especially true of Porthcawl YMCA whose management is in the hands of a voluntary board of trustees. Six years ago, Porthcawl YMCA became an incorporated body, which means we are a limited company and a registered charity (as a Christian organisation). The trustees are also the directors of the company with a limited liability.
We are very much in need of people with a sense of responsibility, adventure and willingness to join the board of management and or the programme committee. There are plans afoot for the development of youth work for the town and there is a need for other ideas, suggestions and challenges to take Porthcawl YMCA forward for another 100 years!
Porthcawl YMCA will mark the 175th anniversary with a coffee morning on June 17 at 10.30am. The High Sheriff and Mayor of Porthcawl, will be present when a visual presentation of the work of the YMCA will be shown.
If you are interested in any of this – maybe you have had contact with the YMCA in the past – please call in and see what is happening.
