A Llanharan man has been banned from keeping animals for 10 years after he neglected seven chickens and two turkeys.

David Sanders (69) of Bethlehem View, Llanharan, Pontyclun, appeared at Cardiff Magistrates Court on January 22 and pleaded guilty to five offences under the Animal Welfare Act 2006.

They were that at Pendre Allotments, Llanharan, he caused unnecessary suffering to seven chickens and turkeys for failing to address the causes of their poor condition and weight loss, by failing to get proper and necessary veterinary care and attention for two chickens’ sour crop and by failing to get proper and necessary veterinary care for the two turkeys’ leg infections.

He also failed to give all the birds a suitable environment and failed to meet their need for a suitable diet, including access to fresh drinking water.

At the court hearing, Sanders was sentenced to 250 hours unpaid work, and was disqualified from keeping all animals for 10 years.
