Mumbles lifeboat disaster is remembered 65 years on

A small community near Swansea has commemorated the 65th anniversary of a maritime disaster off the south Wales coast.

All eight men in the Mumbles lifeboat crew died in April 1947 while going to the aid of the steamship, The Samtampa, which had run aground off Porthcawl.

The 39 crew members of that vessel also perished in one of Wales’ worst maritime disasters.

Carwyn Jones reports.
