The first time I went abroad was in the early 1970s, to Spain, when package holidays to the Costa Brava were the thing. But in 1978 I fell in love with the Algarve, in Portugal, after recording my third album at a villa in Vale do Lobo. We’d work all day, then go to the little restaurants on the beach that served until late. You can’t beat chicken piri piri barbecued in a shack on the sand. So simple and perfect.

In the early 1980s, I bought a place down the road in Albufeira with my husband. We now spend about six months of the year there. We had the original villa knocked down and rebuilt it with big windows to enjoy the views. There’s…
