Nostalgic way to set sail

IF you fancy a trip on the high seas — and back in time — pleasure steamers Waverley and Balmoral are sailing from Swansea and Porthcawl this month.

Cruises from Swansea begin on August 14, and there is also one trip from Briton Ferry on August 21.

The trips are to Ilfracombe, North Devon, while a sailing next Tuesday takes in the National Trust Island of Lundy.

Said to be Britain’s only sea-going pleasure steamers, the two vessels are owned by a charity, supported by the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society, and registered for more than 700 passengers, with a restaurant, lounges, bars and souvenir shops.

Copies of the summer cruise programme are available from tourist information centres.
