Readers of The GEM may recall that in August, the Royal British Legion (RBL) Poppy Appeal announced a campaign to encourage shops and businesses in Cowbridge to ‘Paint the Town Red’ during the Poppy Appeal fortnight, by arranging window displays on the poppy theme.

The campaign is off to a very positive start. So far, 40-odd businesses in and around the High Street have agreed to display a large poppy (30–35cm; 12–14”) in diameter in their windows, and a number of these are also busy designing window displays.

The poppies have been produced by the Cutting Edge Group, which is collaborating with the Poppy Appeal and is lending these poppies to participants (limited to one each, no charge or hidden extras).

The poppy can be can be accompanied by a Poppy Appeal window sticker “Supporting the Poppy Appeal”. The poppies are very attractive and can readily form part of a larger display.

We are very excited about working with The Cutting Edge Group, they have produced an extremely attractive design which has been well received.

We are also very pleased they will also be repeating their display of World War One quilts from last year. We anticipate putting our large poppies on the lamp posts once again and believe with all these elements working together we can ‘Paint the Town Red’ and create a very positive atmosphere.

Ty Hafan, which produced an attractive poppy window display last year, has promised to better it this year. Manager Julie Williams, said: “It is important that charities work together, support each other and feed something back into the communities that support them.

“We hope this will help show the people of Cowbridge how much we appreciate them.”

The Poppy Appeal starts on October 29 so there is a bit of time left and still room for a few more to become involved.

Any businesses that would like to take part are invited to telephone 01446 774306.
