People keep letting their dogs mess on football pitches and Porthcawl AFC is fed up with it

A football club is appealing to dog owners to stop their pets fouling on their pitches as they face a constant struggle to keep them clean.

Members of Porthcawl Town AFC said the four council-owned pitches they play on at Lock’s Lane in Porthcawl are consistently used as toilets by dogs.

Player and committee member Tom Warren said: “It’s a constant pain. We are forever picking up dog poo before a game and sometimes even during a game. It’s not pleasant.

“It’s been an issue for a number of years and obviously very dangerous to children and anyone partaking in sports on the fields.”

He added that the club has members from age six upwards, with teams in every age group up to the senior team who play in the South Wales Alliance League Division One.

‘Children check the pitches’

A parent whose sons aged nine and 13 play for the club said the young players walk around the fields with their heads down looking for dog poo before every game.

“I have a dog myself so I have always got dog poo bags with me. Before every game I get them out and parents, kids and coaches go around checking the pitch.”

The man, who did not wish to be named, said: “The alternative is that we don’t do that and it doesn’t get noticed.”

Tom said: “It’s just about raising awareness really. We have spoken to some dog owners too. The last thing we want is to have young kids fall in it.”

He added that there are fences around the pitches but two gates are always left open and the pitches are also accessible from the car park.

‘What are people thinking?’

Councillor Ceri Reeves, Bridgend County Borough Council’s cabinet member for communities, said: “Dog fouling is always unpleasant to deal with, but especially when it is left on sports fields that are used by people of all ages including young children.

“The majority of owners are responsible and make sure that they clean up after their dogs, but it only takes one or two to spoil it for everyone else.

“You really have to question what people are thinking when they allow their pets to foul on sports fields or pitches. This is both disgusting and a potential health hazard, and is clearly unacceptable.”
