Ponty edge close game in Rhondda

PONTRHYDYFEN continued their solid start to the season by grinding out a 7-6 win at Tynewydd Park against a powerful Treherbert side in division five south central.

The visitors, who are joint top with Porthcawl, got a fine try by wing Steve Colarusso after five minutes. Marc Sheppard’s conversion was Ponty’s last score.

Josh Morris landed two penalties for the Rhondda hosts but failed with other attempts as Ponty rode their luck to cling on for victory.

Tonna got their first win of the campaign with a 50-22 success at home to Rhigos.

In division five west, Swansea Uplands maintained their 100 per cent record with a 27-5 win at Bynea.

They ran in five tries through replacement Ian Lewis, centre Paul Veck, wing John Govier, scrum-half James Edmunds and his brother Tom, at fly-half. Tom also landed one conversion.

The Uplands are joint second with Gowerton, who also made it three wins from three with a 44-0 success at Cefneithin. Gowerton ran in eight tries, four of them going to fly-half Josh Hamer, who also landed two conversions.

The other try-scorers were full-back Luke Hughes, hooker Jonny Rees, replacement centre Bleddyn James and replacement lock Mark Dennis with a 40-yard run.

Penygroes top the table after a 27-20 win at home to St Clears. Wing Phil Morgan and inside centre Johnny Singleton shared the four tries.
