A football festival in memory of Paul Morgan and to raise funds for CLIC Sargent takes place at Rest Bay Sports Ground on Saturday, September 8.

Paul died two years ago of cancer at the age of 52 and the festival has been organised by his father Tony who is the club secretary at Porthcawl Utd FC.

It will be a poignant day for Tony and the family who are keen to raise funds for CLIC Sargent which helps young people dealing with cancer.

Paul, a father of two, was born in Porthcawl and lived in Tondu. He was employed in the gas industry and his work took him all over South Wales.

His last position was at the Llandarcy depot where he worked as a project officer and was held in high regard by colleagues.

In October 2015, he complained of a severe headache for nine days and after hospital tests and scans doctors discovered an aggressive and incurable brain tumour.

Following a brave 17-week battle he sadly passed away on February 13, 2016.

Paul was a keen sportsman who played football for Porthcawl Boys Club, so it is fitting that the ‘Paul Morgan Memorial Football Festival’ has been organised in Porthcawl by his father.

Tony said: “It’s a very big event – there are over 72 sides from all over south Wales competing and we’re expecting 1,000 people to be there.

“The football matches start at 10am and go on until 5pm.

“We plan to hold the festival each year and help to fight the various forms of cancer by making contributions to a range of organisations who are trying to tackle the disease.

“Many families have been affected by this disease which seems to be on the increase. This year we have chosen to support CLIC Sargent.”

From diagnosis, CLIC Sargent’s care teams step in to help young people with cancer. They provide a specialist package of support tailored to each young patient, their siblings and family.

Event organisers hope that – weather permitting – there will be rides and a bouncy castle for youngsters to enjoy.

Entry with a programme is £1 and there will be volunteers with buckets if members of the public would like to make a donation to CLIC Sargent.

Parking is available at Rest Bay car park.

Tony added: “I hope it will be a great day out for all the family and a chance for children to have fun.”
