Porthcawl Jazz Festival 2015: Who will be bringing us all that jazz?

There will be 23 shows in seven venues when the Porthcawl Jazz Festival, known as Jazz on the Sands, returns this weekend.

And the musicians will be travelling to the seaside town from as far away as Brazil, France, Japan, Spain and the USA for the event, which will also showcase some of the very best from the UK.

Heading up this year’s bill and visiting Porthcawl for the first time, national icons The Temperance Seven will present their unique blend of surreal entertainment packaged within a programme of flawless recreations of 1920s and 30s jazz classics.

Other Brits include Simon Spillett, John Critchinson, Dave Green, Spike Wells, Eddie Parker and vocalist Jeff Hooper, who will be marking the centenary of the birth of Frank Sinatra.

The international team of Arturo Serra, Juan Galiardo, Atsuko Shimada, Gui Tavares, Donnie Joe Sweeney and the San Sébastien Septet will cover just about every style from dyed-in-the-wool New Orleans trad through classic bossa to contemporary fusion.

Festival favourites the Liberty Street Jazz Band, Graham Watkins Quartet with Clare Hingott, Afternoon in Paris and the Porthcawl Rock Club are joined this year by Rumblestrutters, the Madi Stimpson Trio, John Stark’s Mainstreamers, Mock Thee Knot, the Sarah Smith Quartet, John Mills, the Jayne Sarah/Dan Phelps Duo and Dave Cottle.

Young musical talent will have an opportunity to shine at the Junior Jazz Open Mic Session, part of an ongoing commitment on the part of the Festival to encourage young players through a series of jazz workshops and masterclasses.

Now in its 14th year, it may not be as famous as the Brecon event, but Porthcawl has certainly gained a reputation for its jazz thanks to the annual festival.

The 2015 event follows on from a successful festival in 2014 which featured The Big Chris Barber Band, Rhondda Symphony Pops Orchestra, Colourscape and Digby Fairweather among others.

The Porthcawl Jazz Festival is taking place at venues throughout the town from tomorrow until Sunday (April 17 to 19). For tickets and further details, contact the Grand Pavilion box office on 01656 773389 or visit www.porthcawl-jazz-festival.com
