The Porthcawl Lions’ charity golf match took place at the Grove Golf Club on Friday, June 2, starting in a heavy rain shower.

However, improving weather throughout the day resulted in a successful event.

In its 37 years, the Porthcawl Lions have raised more than £500,000 for charity with this and other events in the town, including car rallies, fashion shows, car boot and book sales.

The £2,000 raised by the event was presented by the Mayor of Porthcawl, Coun Lorrie Desmond-Williams. £1,000 went to the Porthcawl Stroke Club and chairman Keith Duggan accepted the cheque.

Another cheque for £1,000 was accepted by Andy Thomas for Prostate Cymru at the Princess of Wales Hospital.

As part of The Lions Club International centenary celebrations, Porthcawl will be hosting an evening with Niall Ferguson at All Saints Church at 7pm on Wednesday, June 21.

Results of matches: Ladies’ longest drive: Isabel Lowe; Ladies’ winning team: C Eynon.

Men’s longest drive: D Roberts, SW Police; Nearest the pin: Alan Levelle; Men’s winning team: The Greys; second: The Commacheros.

The Lions’ Cup was won by Mike Hughes from Hereford Lions.

The event was presided over by Porthcawl Lions president, Don Tickner.
