’It’s not often that one can celebrate 100 years’ was the comment by the president of the Porthcawl Lions Club, Andrew Collier.

He was at the Hi Tide on Thursday, October 26 in company with the Mayor of Porthcawl, Cllr Lorrie Desmond Williams, together with Lion Club members plus representatives of many of the charities and organisations that the Lions had donated money to during the past year.

It was in 1917 in Chicago that the first Lions Club was formed. The Porthcawl club itself had its first meeting in 1980 and two of the founders namely Les Higgins and Don Tickner are stilll very much involved in the club’s many activities.

After enjoying a festive meal, those present were entertained by the well known Ivor Williams and his guitar. Ivor was joined by a number of the ladies present and a sing-a-long was enjoyed by all.

There then followed the presentation of cheques to the charities and organisations by the Mayor and the Lions President.

The evening concluded with those present enjoying slices of birthday cake and of course, the singing of ‘Happy Birthday’.

The Porthcawl Lions Club welcomes new members, just telephone Jim Marshall on 01656 859505 or contact any of the Lions.

The club hosts the Christmas Grotto in the Porthcawl Museum from Saturday, November 25, from 11am to 4pm. Santa will be there.
