Porthcawl Pyle ABC recently had three local youngsters representing their club and local community where they would box in the finals of the Welsh National Open Championship in search of winning the coveted red vest of Wales, a first for the club in over four years.

First up was Carmen Lynch in the 57kg junior females category. She had put many hours of hard work and training in to get to a level that her coaches deemed her ready for the championship. Unfortunately at the last minute news filtered through at the weigh-in that her opponent had withdrawn from the competition leaving Carmen as Welsh champion for 2019.

Second up was Dafydd Jones, he had entered the competition after coming off the back of winning the Welsh Novice championship back in October and was aiming to go one better and win the main championship title.

Dafydd had to box through the quarter-finals and semi-finals pulling off two impressive wins on route to the final where he then came up against a tough lad from Splott ABC. Dafydd stuck to the game plan landing fast clean counter punches on the back foot to be crown Welsh Open champion.

Third up was Solomon Kembrey – Sol went into the tournament with only one fight under his belt, however his coaches had full faith in his ability. Solomon was drawn against a lad with over 20 fights’ experience and already a Welsh champion in the past!

This did not deter Solomon or his coaches, he stepped in and gave an amazing account of himself boxing well and catching and hurting his opponent on many occasions during the bout. However his opponent’s experience showed in the end and unfortunately he didn’t get the nod but Solomon exceeded all expectations and did everyone proud, and is definitely a future Welsh champion in the making!

Sean Evans boxed in the senior elite championship in the earlier rounds; Sean had entered the tournament on a run of good form and with confidence high, in the first round of the competition he drew a very classy opponent.

He struggled with the range inthe first round but soon figured his opponent out and fought his way back into the fight, finishing strongly, unfortunately not quite enough to get the decision but a fantastic effort for his first time boxing at elite senior level!

Following the performances Porthcawl Pyle ABC and two of the boxers had some great news – Dafydd Jones and Carmen Lynch had been selected to represent Wales at the upcoming GB 3 nations championship at the Welsh Institute of Sport in Sophia Gardens on May 3/4.

Dafydd was selected on merit and performance on route to becoming Welsh champion and Carmen was invited up to the Welsh Performance Squad to be assessed, after impressing during the two-day selection trial under the Welsh national coaching team she was invited to also represent Wales at the Great Britain Three Nation’s tournament.

What an outstanding achievement for youngsters coming out of Porthcawl Pyle ABC to go on to represent their country – this is what the club is all about, helping keep kids off the street and out of trouble while also giving them the opportunity and guidance to help them achieve their dreams in the sport.

Coaches Wayne Charles and Shane Lynch were proud of the outcome of the championship after all the training and preparation that went into getting the boxers ready and are now excited to see their team of boxers progress onto represent Wales where they hope to bring a medal or two back to Porthcawl Pyle ABC.
