Porthcawl will be given a new primary health care centre – WalesOnline

Porthcawl is to get a new primary health care centre.

And health chiefs are urging residents to share their views on what they want to see as the proposals are finalised.

The announcement by Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board (ABMU) has been welcomed by Bridgend AM Carwyn Jones who branded the current system “not fit for purpose” because many residents face long waits for GP appointments.

“The proposed new Primary Care Centre for Porthcawl is much needed in the town and is long overdue,” he said.

Not fit for purpose

“I have spoken to many people in Porthcawl who have complained about the difficulty of acquiring appointments and the additional pressures on GP services and availability due to the high influx of tourists during the summer season.

“Also, with new housing in Porthcawl, this will bring extra pressure on an already creaking service.

“All in all, the current arrangements are not fit for purpose.”

The public engagement exercise was formally announced by ABMU at a meeting of community group Porthcawl Shout Forum last Friday , as it has campaigned for five years for better healthcare services in the town.

‘Period of engagement’

A spokeswoman for ABMU said: “In agreement with the Community Health Council, we have started a period of engagement running until Friday, December 18 to discuss with residents our ideas for a new Primary and Community Care centre for Porthcawl.

“All Porthcawl residents, whether they regularly access local GP and community health care services or not, are invited to take part.”

ABMU said it will be sending information out to patients directly and will also be holding two open days in November.

Residents can also send their views via email, letter or via the community health council.

Further information will also be available from GP surgeries.

The spokeswoman added: “This is a very important time for the residents of Porthcawl and we urge everyone to get involved.”
