ELVIS could become as famous a Welsh export as coal and steel.

A franchise deal could see Porthcawl’s annual festival dedicated to Elvis Presley sold to Europe.

Last year’s All Shook Up weekend attracted around 30,000 enthusiasts to Porthcawl.

Festival organiser Peter Phillips is heading off to Poland, Latvia and Hungary, the first three target countries where a three-year franchise could attract up to £250,000.

“Elvis could take over from coal and steel as South Wales’s main export,” said Mr Phillips.

“This is the world’s biggest Elvis festival and that is a big selling point.”

Mr Phillips said he was encouraged to investigate the export proposal further after a chance remark from First Minister Carwyn Jones, who told him the idea might have legs.

Mr Phillips said he hoped the first franchise festival in the European countries could be up and running as early as 2015.
