Porthcawl’s emerging ‘harbour-quarter’ will expand thanks to £297000 grant

Porthcawl’s harbour facilities are set to expand following a £297,000 boost.

More boats will be coming to the marina area and educational projects will be set up to enable visitors and residents to learn more about the coastal environment.

The grant has been secured by the community-led regeneration body Porthcawl Harbourside, which will use the money to execute what it is calling phase two of the emerging “harbour quarter”, following on from phase one, which was Bridgend County Borough Council’s £3.2m redevelopment of the old harbour into a 70-berth marina.

It is hoped that eventually the old Jennings Building, currently being marketed by the council, will be bought and redeveloped, complementing a proposed maritime centre, which Porthcawl Harbourside also want to build on the site.

Porthcawl Harbourside director Michael Clarke said the Coastal Communities Fund grant “is a huge vote of confidence in community-led regeneration”.

The Coastal Communities Fund is delivered by Big Lottery on behalf of UK Government and through Welsh Government in Wales and aims to fund projects which boost the economies of coastal communities.

A total of £4.5m has been awarded to projects across Wales.

Minister for Communities and Tackling Poverty Lesley Griffiths said: “We want to see vibrant, viable communities all along Wales’s fantastic coastline. The funding will enable those with local knowledge to develop projects addressing the specific issues facing their communities.”

Mr Clarke, who explained that the grant will go towards building a stand that will provide additional storage for boats, said: “We are absolutely delighted that Porthcawl will benefit from £297,597 to further develop the marina/harbour quarter in Porthcawl by increasing boat capacity, providing new water sports activity provision as well as education facilities for visitors and local people.

“This is a huge vote of confidence in community-led regeneration and in our ambitions to develop The Jennings and the proposed Maritime Centre into a high-quality integrated harbour quarter.

“We are most grateful to Coastal Communities Fund, Bridgend County Borough Council communities team, Bic-innovation and local organisations for their generous support and for their courage in supporting us.”

Fellow director Stuart Bentley added: “This funding will enable us to create new direct employment and support expansion of existing and the development of new leisure and educational businesses operating within the marina and harbour area.

“New equipment will include launch and retrieval facilities to enable boats to be lifted out of the water plus a range of coastal educational facilities.”
