Remain and Leave campaigns to battle it out at Porthcawl debate

An in/out EU referendum debate is set to take place on Wednesday, June 15, with speakers from both the Remain and Leave campaigns.

The Question Time-style event on Wednesday is free and open to the public and will start at 7.30pm at the Hi Tide in Porthcawl.

Panellists include Lee Canning, Wales co-ordinator of the Taxpayers’ Alliance, Alex Moscovici , Students for Leave, the Labour party’s Councillor Charles Smith and NUS Wales President Beth Button.

‘People are desperate for information’

Carolyn Webster, of the local Leave campaign, said she decided to organise the event ahead of the referendum on Thursday, June 23, after meeting people while out campaigning who were keen to know more from both sides.

“Some people are confused and desperate for more information,” she said.

“I’m a huge believer in democracy and you can’t have a democratic decision without facts and information and it’s an opportunity to offer that to people.

“I’m a Leave campaigner, but it’s not going to be one sided, both sides have to be involved. I am just going to be holding the mike and passing it around to people.”

In or out? The nation will decide in the referendum on June 23

She thanked the Hi Tide for donating the room for the debate.

Coun Smith said: “The economic case for and against Remain is not as finely balanced as the leavers try to make out, the economic case is overwhelmingly for Remain, and I look forward to making this case at the Hi Tide.”

Doors open at 7pm and the organisers have asked that questions are submitted on arrival to be considered for inclusion.
