Royal Porthcawl golfer defends Welsh Seniors Championship title at Aberdovey

Royal Porthcawl’s Jeff Thomas successfully defended his Welsh Seniors Championship title by mastering the tough conditions on the West Wales coast at Aberdovey.

He won by eight shots from Pennard’s David Frazer, with Nigel Evans of St Mellons a further shot back, the same margin of victory Thomas enjoyed last year on the same course.

Twelve months ago he needed a final round of 65 to surge through the field, but this time a final round of 74 was plenty to ensure retaining the title as he shared the lead after the first round and never looked back after that.

“I am delighted to have retained the title, it is a wonderful occasion, a reunion of old friends really,” said the South Wales solicitor.

“It has been a tough week, the course was very, very tricky, the greens were hard and the conditions testing.

“Everyone struggled with shots into the greens in particular, but I hit it solidly all week as was shown by the scores. I did not hit many bad shots, so it was a very special week.”

Golf Union of Wales championships manager Gavin Reen added, “Aberdovey certainly provided a stern test as we knew it would.

“It was the classic firm but fair golf course and certainly in wonderful condition so the club can be proud of the effort they put in to make the Welsh Seniors a success once again.

“Congratulations to Jeff, he showed great control in some testing conditions over the three rounds.”
