Rugby star Martyn Williams to launch his annual Walk for Velindre in Porthcawl

People are invited to pull on their hiking boots and join former Welsh rugby international Martyn Williams on his annual Walk for Velindre, which will start and finish in Porthcawl.

Taking place on Sunday, June 28 from 10am, it will start and finish at the Hi Tide Inn in the seaside town and the route will take in the fair and lighthouse and follow the coast to Locks Common and across Rest Bay, onto the boardwalk and turning at Sker House.

This will be the 6th walk that Martyn has led for the Cancer Centre where is a Patron. The previous routes have been a punishing climb up Pen y Fan, followed by three lighthouse walks along the Heritage Coastline, and last year’s route through Llantrisant.

He has also competed in other challenges for Velindre, including climbing Mount Kilimanjaro with Rhod Gilbert and the East Coast Bike Challenge in America last year.

Martyns’ walks have raised well over £50,000 for Velindre and the three-times British Lion is looking forward to trialling a new route.

“The walks have been really well supported over the years and are a great day out – I’m particularly looking forward to this one as it hugs the coastline for most of the rout,” he said.

“Our Velindre Victory over Cancer campaign has been really well supported and hopefully this Walk will help to raise funds so that Velindre can continue to provide the best possible support to every patient, their families and carers dealing with cancer.”

Entry is £10 per person and those who enter by June 12 will receive a Martyn Williams Walk for Velindre T-shirt and goody bag.
