Specialist Porthcawl hotel to reopen after £1m investment

The future of a specialist hotel looks to have been secured thanks to a £1m investment – months after staff were sent home on full pay.

That move sparked fears for the future of the well-loved Glamorgan Holiday Hotel in Porthcawl.

But not-for-profit organisation Cartrefi Cymru, which runs the seafront hotel, has announced that The Portway establishment – which provides care for elderly visitors with additional needs – will reopen in time for the summer holidays.

The £1m investment by Cartrefi Cymru will include £250,000 for a refurbishment of guest facilities and will secure 25 jobs. Cartrefi Cymru says it expects the hotel to bring more than 2,500 visitors to the town each year.

Chris Lewis, who is currently overseeing the refurbishment, has been unveiled as the new manager of the hotel, which has been in Porthcawl for more than 40 years.

‘Exciting new chapter’

The 53-year-old, who lives and was brought up in Porthcawl, said: “I am really delighted to be here as part of this exciting new chapter at the Glamorgan Holiday Hotel.

“I look forward to welcoming guests old and new in the very near future.”

Although an date has yet to be fixed for the reopening, Cartrefi says it is aiming for a date in July.

And Mr Lewis added: “It’s very exciting, but there’s a lot of hard work ahead.”

Adrian Roper, Cartrefi’s chief executive, said he was also very pleased by the news.

He said: “We’ve taken time to listen to guest feedback and used this opportunity to develop a better experience for guests.

‘Wonderful customers’

“The Glamorgan Holiday Hotel has a proud history and Chris and his team are excited to be welcoming back our wonderful customers to this well-loved hotel.

“It’s a positive endorsement of Porthcawl and we look forward to working with the local community in providing further business and employment opportunities.”

Chairman of the Porthcawl Harbourside Company, Mike Clarke, added: “It is excellent news that Porthcawl will retain this unique hotel in a prime harbour-side position.

“Under local management and with a new business model and supported with new investment the hotel will reflect the modern needs of its customers with a strong commitment to the community.”

The hotel is currently undergoing refurbishment, but says it is taking bookings for mid July onwards.
