Bridgend Youth Theatre (BYT) members are set to take on Damon Runyon’s Guys Dolls as they follow in the foot steps of the likes of Rob Brydon and Ruth Jones .

After their success last year with their critically-acclaimed production of A Chorus Line, which celebrated the award-winning theatre company turning 20, it was clear it would be a tough one to beat.

As with Chorus Line, Guys Dolls is one that Roger Burnell, BYT artistic director, had tackled before.

Roger recalled: “I remember Rob and Ruth on stage at the Grand Pavilion in Porthcawl Comprehensive School’s production of the show. Rob played Sky Masterson while Ruth took on the comedy role of Miss Adelaide, she had great comic timing even back then.”

The BYT’s strength in depth means that two girls will share the role this time, with Aisling McCormack Thomas from Cowbridge, and Lili Smith from Porthcawl taking turns.

Also, two girls (Lili Mohamad and Edilya Osbourne) will alternate the role of Miss Sarah Brown, and two boys, (Jude Blake and Huw Evans) will alterate as Nathan Detroit.

Roger Burnell isn’t the only one with fond memories of Guys Dolls as Shelley Rees, who is now a tutor at the BYT, as well as a professional actress taking on roles in productions such as Keeping Faith, recalls another production of the show directed by Mr Burnell.

Shelley also took on the role of Adelaide alongside Richard Harrington (star of Hinterland). This was of course before she landed the role of Stacey Jones in the S4C soap Pobol Y Cwm.

More recently, the 2005 BYT version of Chorus Line had a cast that included Aneurin Barnard (Dunkirk) and Amy Morgan (Mr Selfridge), another example of the BYT’s ability to discover and nurture new talent.

Tickets are available from the Grand Pavilion box office www.grandpavilion.co.uk or 01656 815995. Show times: February 20 and February 21 at 2.30pm and 7.30pm.
