The Porthcawl swim sets a new record on its 50th anniversary!

THE?organisers of the Porthcawl Christmas Morning Swim are reflecting on a stunningly successful 50th anniversary swim, which set a new record! writes PHILIP IRWIN.

All year, they had hoped that the 50th swim might be a special one, and they were rewarded when 1,500 swimmers – a new high – took to the waters.

The event had a charmed life, as heavy rain fell on the preceding days, followed by more rain on Boxing day.

However, Christmas morning was perfect for the swim, with blue skies and a cold, but not freezing, wind.
With the tide halfway down the beach, there was plenty of room for spectators, and an estimated 3,000 were at Sandy Bay to watch.

At 11:45am, Porthcawl Coastguards signalled the start of the parade and cleared a path through the spectators down the beach for the swimmers, many in fancy dress.

The procession was led from the Hi-Tide Inn to the beach by Victor Davies and Chris Hughes each now with 50 swims to their name.

Swimmers from all over the UK and overseas took part, and among the regular entrants was veteran swimmer, Susan Powell from Caldicot, who hasn’t missed a ‘swim’ since 1978.
