Llantwit Major under-9s travelled to Porthcawl for their last game of the season.

The 16 strong squad started the morning, along with all the other teams, observing a minute’s silence in respect for Jimmy Griffiths, the founder of mini and junior rugby in Llantwit Major who recently passed away.

After a good warm up the Llantwit team took to the pitch. The first game saw Llantwit show their improvement in defence working as a team and pushing the Porthcawl side back up the pitch at times with their tackling and defensive line.

Strong attacking play and good passing between the players allowed Ieuan Harrison to break free towards the end of this game to score for Llantwit and draw the first game 1-1.

The morning saw the Llantwit team continue their strong defensive display with outstanding tackling in particular from Abbie Cutting who was ferocious around the pitch, pushing up quickly and making tackle after tackle.

Reuben Hickman was unlucky not to score from a superb interception he made after reading the Porthcawl play and timing his move to perfection.

Porthcawl scored a couple of tries against the Llantwit team but were time and time again pushed back in defence with big tackles from Alfie Creed, Rees Harris and many of the Llantwit players. Porthcawl had to work really hard to break through the defensive line.

Luke Ingram used his pace down the outside to score for the Llantwit side and a further try saw the Llantwit side draw a second game and narrowly lose the final match.

The under-9s are looking forward to working hard over the summer ready for the next season.

Squad: Abbie Cutting, Reuben Hickman, Maison David, Ryan Daws, Jack Robson, Jack Huggins, Rowan Griffiths, Ieuan Harrison, Luke Ingram, Iestyn Bird, Rees Harris, Deio Wood, Jamie Patterson, Keaton Cooke, Charlie Szendzielarz, Alfie Creed.
