Blazing Tom, owned by Cowbridge’s Phil Thomas, landed a gamble at the Tiverton Point-To-Point Steeplechases after being backed from 10-1 to 3-1 in the Intermediate race.

Trained by former point-to-point rider Jonathan Tudor at Merthyr Mawr, the promising seven-year-old made good steady progress throughout the race to beat the favourite Inch Rock ridden by champion rider Will Biddick.

Mr Thomas said: “This will be a nice tonic for my father Ralph who has not been too well. We bred Blazing Tom out of our winning pointer Blazing Ember.”

Blazing Tom’s rider Bradley Gibbs was in cracking form as he also won the featured £1,000 Timico Mixed Open race on the 20-1 outsider Asockastar who was a first winner for Pontypool-based owner/trainer David Bourne.

Asockastar is a former inmate of Tim Vaughan’s Aberthin yard.

Gibbs completed a hat-trick when the ex-Irish mare Nuevo Molino, trained by his father David and owned by his girlfriend Claire Sherriff, landed the open maiden race.
