A newly-formed football team in Porthcawl has hit the back of the net with a bumper donation.

FC Porthcawl, which have just kicked off their first season in the Port Talbot League, has been handed a £1,000 donation by Persimmon Homes West Wales.

The club will use the funds to help pay for things like kit and pitch fees. And the club’s players are also raising funds for toddler Ellie Roberts, the daughter of FC Porthcawl’s Hywel Roberts, who has been diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer.

The donation comes as part of Persimmon’s Community Champions initiative. Each month the Swansea-based housebuilder donates £1,000 each to two charities or community groups in the West Wales area.

David Owen, fundraiser at FC Porthcawl, said: “We were over the moon when we heard about this fantastic donation.

“The team was formed to provide football for all within the Porthcawl area. Our members contribute to help pay for our fields, referees and winter training facilities but sponsorship is vital to our club’s survival.

“We are also currently in the process of raising money in aid of a club member’s daughter. Our hope is to raise funds to help out with any expense that the family might incur during her treatment.

“It’s great to see a big company like Persimmon getting involved with grassroots sport.”
