It’s time once again for an army of volunteers to start planning coffee mornings in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

It seems a small thing, but this fundraising idea has been a massive success, with an amazing total of almost £30 million raised last year.

A spokeswoman for Macmillan said:?“The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is Macmillan’s biggest fundraising event for people facing cancer.

“We ask people all over the UK to host their own Coffee Mornings and donations on the day are made to Macmillan.

“Last year alone we raised £29.5 million and this year we are aiming to raise even more.”

She continued:?“The first ever coffee morning happened way back in 1990. It was a rather small affair with a simple idea: guests would gather over coffee and donate the cost of their cuppa to Macmillan in the process.

“It was so effective, we did it again the next year – only this time nationally. Since then, coffee morning has raised over £165.5 million for Macmillan.”

Perhaps one reason that the ‘World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’ has become such a massive fundraising success is the support and encouragement given by Macmillan to their fundraisers.

The Macmillan website (see contact details at the end of this piece) is full of sound advice and good ideas.

To pursue their target of topping last year’s £29.5 million, Macmillan is excited to be continuing their successful partnership with Marks ?Spencer.

The spokeswoman said:?“Cake tastes better together… that’s why 2017 is our eighth World’s Biggest Coffee Morning in partnership with MS and we’re pulling out all the stops to make it even more successful.

“Since 2010, MS and Macmillan have raised an incredible £10 million to help people living with cancer in their communities. And we couldn’t have done it without the amazing support of MS customers and colleagues.

“All money raised helps to fund Macmillan professionals, such as nurses, occupational therapists and dietitians. Because Macmillan is here to help people live life, no matter what.

“So, whether you’re baking it or faking it this Coffee Morning, you’ll be making a real difference. To help you, there’s a fantastic range of Coffee Morning treats. And you can add some real style to your Coffee Morning with MS’s gorgeous new cake slice, fork set and mug. Finally, don’t miss the chic bag accessories designed by artist Rob Ryan for Macmillan.

“All these goodies will be available only in MS stores this September. And with every purchase MS will make a donation to Macmillan so we can be there for more and more people with cancer.”

Underlying all the efforts made by Macmillan’s army of volunteers, of course, is raison d’etre of the charity – making life more liveable for people dealing with cancer.

The Macmillan spokeswoman said:?“There are now 2.5 million people in the UK living with cancer. By 2030, it will be four million people, and we want to be there for them all.

“One in three of us will get cancer, and it will be one of the toughest things we’ll ever have to face. Our goal is to make sure no one faces cancer alone.

“We provide medical, emotional, practical and financial support, as well as campaigning for better cancer care. And because cancer affects more than just those facing it, we’re there for friends and family too.”
