Music lovers packed a village green for the third Newton Beer and Pop Festival in Porthcawl on Saturday.

Families brought picnics and watched 11 bands play for free at the event, which raised about £1,000 for two selected charities – Porthcawl YMCA’s Y Centre on John Street and Welsh children’s cancer charity Latch.

Organiser Steve Maitland Thomas said the event started three years ago as a welcome home party for two teams which had walked from North to South Wales to raise money for Help The Heroes.

“Everything is free,” he said.

“The bands play for free and entry is free and if people want to put money in a bucket then great.

“I’m a great believer that if you like music and the band is willing to play for nothing then enjoy it!”

Steve said this is the first year the festival was organised by a new company he set up with a few friends called Porthcawl Events, as the organisation was eligible for a grant from Porthcawl Town Council.

He said he has already begun organising next year’s event and six bands have already signed up.
