Pop go the crowds: Music lovers flock to Porthcawl for festival – WalesOnline

The rain stayed away and the crowds came out in force for the fourth Newton Beer and Pop Festival.

Thirteen bands took to the stage – two lorry trailers forming a 45ft platform – at Newton Green, Porthcawl, on Saturday, drawing in music lovers and helping to raise more than £2,000 for nominated charities, the Wales Air Ambulance and Sandville Self-Help Centre.

Steve Maitland Thomas, one of the organisers of the free event, said: “The bands were brilliant and the event was very well attended.

“We had the best bands around. All the local businesses did incredibly well out of it too – there were queues outside most of them all day.”

Funds were raised through bucket collections on the green and businesses have also been asked to donate a share of their takings from the day.

“Our aim is to give talented local musicians the kind of audience they deserve and raise money for charity,” said Steve.

He thanked Davies Logistics Bridgend, Braceys Builders’ Merchants and all their supporters.

Plans are already in place for a fifth event next summer.
